Before electricity was discovered, oil lamps and candles were the only means of illumination. It is mostly made from paraffin but beeswax and certain plant extracts have been known to be made into candles. There are also different kinds of candle forms. We are most familiar with the candle stick, the votive candle and tea lights. Each has its own characteristics that make it effective in different ways.

The different forms of the candle have spawned varied forms of candle holders. The simple glass plate on the table top will hold a votive candle but the candlestick needs a sturdy holder that can hold the candle in a tight fit. Wrought iron candle holders are popular because of the many simple and intricate designs. They blend well in Spanish themed décor. They are also weather resistant and can be used outdoors.
