grandfather clocks

How did this towering piece of freestanding, weight-driven pendulum clock come to be called a grandfather clock? Could it be because it stood 6 to 8 feet from the floor? Could it be because of its authoritative sound as it strikes out the time? Whatever the reason, grandfather clocks stand with authority as it claims respect as an important piece in any home. They are key pieces that are handed down from generation to generation.

A grandfather clock needs special care and attention. It is not difficult to set up but because it is run by gravity unlike traditional clocks that are run by electricity special instruction is included when you buy one. Once set-up they have to be wound manually at regular intervals, sometimes daily, sometimes weekly, and even monthly. A general clean-up and oiling should be done by a professional every two to three years. With proper care, grandfather clocks will continue to provide time in its unique way for many many years.
