Mantel clocks

Some clocks are hanged on walls; others, such as the grandfather clock, stand by itself on the floor. Mantel clocks are traditionally placed on the shelf or on the mantle, above the fireplace. Most mantel clocks have a distinct design consisting of the round face of the clock in a wooden case characterized by a wide base. Some mantel clocks are a shaped like rectangles.

Whatever the shape, mantel clocks are characterized by movements that are supported by a seat board as compared to wall clocks whose movements are attached to the back board. The value of a mantel clock is measured by the dependability of the clockwork movement and the material used in the casing. Popular materials used are oak or cherry. They can be simply or intricately finished. Some mantel clocks will be fitted with polished brass handles and corner scrolls framing the glass door.
