We need things to fasten items together. Aside from zippers, Velcro and strings, buckles remain a necessary component to our fashion get up. Buckles have been a fashion statement for centuries. It was made popular by European culture and helped define social stature. For most people though, a buckle is simply beheld as a device to keep pants up.

In ancient Greece and Rome, buckles connote ranks in the military. Officers during the olden days normally were issued finer quality steel swords with more embellishments such as gold and silver. These made the weapons heavier compared to that of foot soldiers. Having a heavier sword required thicker leather belts and therefore bigger buckles.
